The best essential oils for summer skin

Add these essential oils to your beauty routine for healthy, sun-kissed skin all summer long.

If seasons were people, then summer would be that crazy girlfriend who could pull all-nighters and dance for hours in 6” heels. Summer is unquestionably the party season. But between those cheeky pool parties and the naughty late-night cocktails, there’s potential to get carried away and forget about one very important thing – your skin. Aside from sunscreen, there are many essential oils you can add into your beauty routine to ensure glowing skin, even on the warmest of days.

Geranium essential oil

Geranium essential oil is hugely beneficial to your whole body. It minimises inflammation, improves circulation, balances hormones and when you use it in aromatherapy, it can even alleviate depression. Geranium is an astringent, which means it causes skin cells to contract and become tighter, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Try mixing a few drops with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba, and use twice daily until you see results. It also has insect repellent properties, so add in a few drops to your body lotion and enjoy the sunset without fear of those annoying summer mosquitoes.

Lavender essential oil

While the smell of lavender brings my grandmother to mind (love you, Nana!), this scent can work wonders on your skin. According to dermatologists, lavender essential oil is one of the best to combat acne. We sweat a lot in summer which can cause a build-up of sebum under the skin - resulting in pimples. Lavender oil is antibacterial so not only does it stop the growth of the bacteria that causes acne, it’s also an antiseptic that treats spots that have already formed. It also has sun protective properties that complements your sunscreen routine on sensitive areas like your face, neck and décolletage.

Neroli essential oil

Neroli oil is extracted from the flowers of the orange tree and named after 16th century Princess Anna Maria de La Tremoille of Nerola, Italy, who loved using it for all health and beauty reasons. It’s an antiseptic, antibacterial disinfectant that can be used as an antidepressant, deodorant, sedative, tonic AND aphrodisiac. Talk about an all-in-one. What’s more, neroli is an emollient which means it’s the perfect moisturiser.

Rose essential oil

Roses are likely the most recognisable flower in the world. Fit for a queen, rose essential oil is extracted from the Damascus Rose and has hundreds of beneficial components. It’s a cicatrizant, which means it promotes healing and reduces appearance of scars and stretchmarks and it works wonders as a libido booster (yay!). Add a couple of drops into your favourite body lotion and use daily for sexy summer skin.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is extracted from the twigs and leaves of the Tea Tree, a native plant of Southeast Queensland and New South Wales. This essential oil has long had a reputation as a cure-all. You can use it to fight almost all tropical infections and diseases and it works impressively as a disinfectant. It’s a great replacement for most of your bathroom cabinet and can be used as a makeup remover, cleanser, hand serum, anti-dandruff treatment and so much more.
